Bolivia s Historic Move: Integrating Stablecoins into Banking
Bolivia is set to make a groundbreaking shift in its financial landscape by integrating cryptocurrency into its banking system. This move, described as historic for Latin America, was announced by Jose Gabriel Espinoza, who revealed that the country will begin to incorporate cryptocurrency into its banking framework. This will enable banks to offer services such as savings accounts, credit cards, and loans based on crypto.
The focus will be on stablecoins, which have become a vital alternative for citizens seeking to protect themselves against devaluation and inflation due to ongoing exchange controls.
In contrast, Tether is winding down its mining operations in Uruguay. After months of negotiations for better energy tariffs with the national power company UTE , Tether decided to cease its operations, resulting in the termination of 30 out of 38 employees. This decision follows a period where Tether s Uruguayan subsidiary, Microfin, had halted payments to UTE, leading to power cuts at two mining sites.
Meanwhile, the Libra Trust has emerged unexpectedly to support Argentine companies. Allegedly funded by a portion of the proceeds from the Libra token launch, the trust aims to provide grants to these companies through its website. Data researcher Fernando Molina linked recent fund movements nearly 100 million worth of cryptocurrency moved from wallets associated with the Libra token launch to this initiative. However, the trust s website claims it operates independently of Hayden Davis and Javier Milei, without disclosing further details about its management.
In summary: Bolivia is poised to integrate stablecoins into its banking system, marking a significant step for cryptocurrency in the region. Conversely, Tether is exiting the Uruguayan market due to unfavorable conditions, while the newly established Libra Trust seeks to empower Argentine businesses with grants, despite maintaining a level of secrecy about its operations.
