China approves interest payments on e-CNY deposits

Starting January 1, 2026, Chinese residents will be able to earn interest on deposits held in the digital yuan e-CNY .
Regulators said the e-CNY will serve not only as a payment instrument but also as a deposit currency.
The move is aimed at accelerating public adoption of the country s central bank digital currency.
